Copyright help regarding Koelle Polyglotta Africana page 1 (part)[edit]

I wish to use a screenshot of a small part of a page of a book made digitally available by the University of Hamburg Library. The book was published in 1854. The part I want to use is only one-sixth of the page. The website in question is this one: https://katalogplus.sub.uni-hamburg.de/vufind/Record/1043565361?rank=1 Is it OK to use this screenshot, and what licence should I add in the licensing box?

@Kanjuzi: Hi, and welcome. {{PD-old-100-expired}} should do, as the author died in 1902.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:42, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks very much for this. By the way, I see that my downloaded copy has the following on it: Quellenangabe Institution + PURL (Persistent Uniform Resource Locator) des Images/Titels Beispiel: Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg, https://resolver.sub.uni-hamburg.de/kitodo/PPN670034223 (CC BY-SA 4.0 [1]). Does that mean I should change the licence to "by-sa-4.0"? Kanjuzi (talk) 07:50, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
@Kanjuzi: Where exactly do you see that license link?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:57, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

How do I use this on the English wiki?[edit]

Hi I was looking through the Genoa C.F.C. kits and I found a better version for the 2011-12 season on the Italian wiki here but I can't use it on the English wiki for some reason. Is there a way to upload it to wiki commons or would I have to remake the kit entirely? REDMAN 2019 (talk) 12:00, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

These images are generated by a template, based on partial images, there is no ready-made image. The relevant template on the English Wikipedia is apparently en:Template:Infobox football club season. With the correct parameters, you should be able to achieve the same look. For an example usage, see en:2014–15 Genoa C.F.C. season. The Commons page Genoa C.F.C. kits uses a similar template, {{Football kit}}, based on the same images. --rimshottalk 12:22, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:OVHcloud logo.jpg[edit]

Hi, I'm trying to update the official page of my company (OVH, that changed the name to OVHcloud) in Wikipedia, and I don't know how to update the logo in the company profile with the updated one. I don't know how which kind of license I need to add for corporate logos... Any suggestions would be really welcomed. Thanks in advance! --109.190.254.58 17:10, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

  • Clearly that is complex enough to be copyrighted. Most likely the copyright is held either by the designer of the logo or by the company (I have no way to guess which, but if you are connected to the company, you should be able to find out). The only way that logo would be acceptable here on Commons is if someone is willing to grant a free license (see Commons:Licensing if you are not sure what that means). Either the company can indicate that free license on their website and you can reference that in the "Permission" field of the {{Information}} template on the file page, or (slower, but effective) they can go through the process described at COM:OTRS to provide a clear release of a license.
  • NOTE that Commons absolutely does not accept files on a fair-use basis, so the licensing is necessary to host it here. Note also that Commons would like the highest resolution available for a given image; what you uploaded is very low resolution for an image of that sort.
  • If your main concern is an article in the English-language Wikipedia, then you can leave Commons out of the picture entirely; Wikipedia does allow non-free logos for articles about companies. Those are uploaded directly to the English-language Wikipedia; Commons is not involved at all. See en:Wikipedia:Logos.
  • Also, you say "I'm trying to update the official page of my company". Usually writing or editing an article about your own company -- especially just from an IP address, without having an account -- is against policy on the English-language Wikipedia. Please see Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest. - Jmabel ! talk 00:25, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

Hazel Miner issue of North Dakota Childrens Home Founder[edit]

I have a pdf of the North Dakota Childrens Home Finder (Hazel Miner issue) from January 15, 1921. It contains the story of the teenager Hazel Miner who sacrificed her own life in order to save her two siblings in a snow storm. Please see Wikipedia for details on her. The magazine issue is surely in the public domain after nearly hundred years, and I thought it would be fine to have the pdf preserved somewhere. Question is, may I upload it here on Commons and, if so, how? Mieliestronk (talk) 20:18, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

  • @Mieliestronk: Anything published in the U.S. before 1925 is in the public domain and can be tagged as {{PD-US-expired}}.
  • You can upload a PDF exactly the same way you upload (for example) a JPG or PNG. - Jmabel ! talk 00:27, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

WikiData infobox gets added to disambig category[edit]

After a CFD, I've made Category:Tarata into a disambiguation category. I changed the corresponding WikiData item's Commons category to Category:Tarata, Peru. Still, the Peru city's infobox keeps getting added to this category. What's wrong? --rimshottalk 20:26, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

@Rimshot: The problem was that Category:Tarata (Q6319496) still had a sitelink to Category:Tarata. I updated that link to point to Category:Tarata, Peru and removed the infobox again. I hope that will be enough. --bjh21 (talk) 23:16, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Richiesta assistenza[edit]

Gentilissimi, Buongiorno.

--Ruthven (msg) 13:06, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding Martin Herchenröder.jpg[edit]

Image use[edit]

Hi. I have been given an image I would like to use in the WP article, David J. Zimmerman. I've been told by the author it has a CC license. The license appears in the metadata of the image. How can I confirm it is in fact usable in a WP article? I can post the image metadata if that helps. Thanks. VictorMooney (talk) 15:47, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

@VictorMooney: Hi, and welcome. Is the image available online? Is the author the subject? If you are unsure, please have the image author license it on their website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:08, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Thanks. The author is not the subject. I believe the image is posted to the authors Facebook page. Can the image be uploaded if the image metadata shows the license? Thanks again. VictorMooney (talk) 16:16, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

@VictorMooney: I think that I have never seen image metadata on Facebook that shows a license. What is the URL?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:25, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: I don't know, but I'll contact the author for that URL and get back here. VictorMooney (talk) 16:31, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: I think the questioner means the metadata with the copy he received from the author, not the metadata with a copy possibly on facebook. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:16, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
@VictorMooney: It depends on what CC license it is. "A CC license" is not specific. There are many CC licenses. Some are accepted on Wikimedia, others are not accepted. What license is it? That would be specified after "CC". -- Asclepias (talk) 13:16, 31 August 2020 (UTC)Sorry, forgot to login VictorMooney (talk) 12:39, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

@Asclepias: Hi. This is the CC license as it appears in the image metadata. <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons License" style="border-width:0" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by/4.0/80x1. I'm sure you know better than I, exactly which license this is.VictorMooney (talk) 21:40, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

@VictorMooney: Ok, it is the license {{Cc-by-4.0}} and it is accepted here. You can upload the image to Wikimedia Commons with that license and then you can use the image in Wikipedia. Assuming good faith, I guess the metadata is evidence that the author issued the license. However, for more safety, you might ask the author to send a confirmation by email (please see Commons:OTRS for details). -- Asclepias (talk) 22:13, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

@Asclepias: Good. Thanks for that.VictorMooney (talk) 22:25, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

@VictorMooney: Was this about File:Picture of David J. Zimmerman in the Indian Himalayas.jpg? If so, I see the matter was already partly resolved two days ago. But what was the meaning of "the author is not the subject"? Isn't the subject David J. Zimmerman? And the author is David J. Zimmerman? Also, there's a contradiction in the indications of the license(s). The metadata does offer the photo under the license CC BY 4.0. But you uploaded it with a different license, CC BY-SA 4.0. And the author sent a communication to OTRS with CC BY-SA 4.0. Must it be understood that the author changed his mind, decided to withdraw the CC BY 4.0 license he had offered in the metadata, and to restrict it to a CC BY-SA 4.0 license only? -- Asclepias (talk) 01:51, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

@Asclepias: The author of the picture is Zimmerman's wife, and she is the one who sent the communication to QTRS. I'm not sure now how to resolve the license discrepancy, or if it is, indeed, a problem. What do you suggest I do about that? Thanks 67.211.94.190 12:38, 1 September 2020 (UTC)67.211.94.190 12:36, 1 September 2020 (UTC) @Asclepias: Sorry, wasn't logged in...VictorMooney (talk) 12:42, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

@VictorMooney: Correct the author name on the file page. - Jmabel ! talk 14:04, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
Ah ok, thanks for the clarification, then the "author" field in the description page of the file should not indicate the name of David J. Zimmerman but should indicate the name of his wife, unless she explicitly specified that the authorship credit must not be given to her but must be given to David J. Zimmerman. About the license, I'm not sure what Commons should do. The problem comes from the fact that the author herself offered two different licenses, but we don't know what she really wanted to do. The license initially offered, "CC BY", is more free than the second license, "CC BY-SA". Maybe the author doesn't have a problem with "CC BY" and did not realize that "CC BY-SA" is not the same, and "CC BY-SA" is a mistake. Or maybe she changed her mind. We're left with the problem of having to choose to ignore one or the other license. Commons could consider that the author changed her mind and revoked the "CC BY" license. Or Commons could consider that the "CC BY" is still applicable. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:04, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Thank you. VictorMooney (talk) 14:25, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Mrepoulis - Undelition request[edit]

Hello, I submitted a deletion request on August 25 and there were two responses. One asking me to to give an example of an article where my work could be included. I gave a general view of my biographical sketch and the places where my work could be included. The second response was that I had not replied and none of the administrators request were answered. Now my works are in the archival page. Please advise as to what the next step might be and specifically what more is required.

Thank you,

regards,

talk to me Hello Jeff G. An example that I found in wikipedia could be 'Contemporary classical music' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contemporary_classical_music another example for my art work could be 'Illustration' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illustration

Mrepoulis {````|15:43, 28 August 2020‎|Mrepoulis}}

@Mrepoulis: Hi, and welcome. I see you neglected to "give an example of an article on a Wikimedia project where your content might be of use" in your section of COM:UDR after 26+ hours, which was therefore closed as "Not done" and archived to Commons:Undeletion requests/Archive/2020-08#Request for undeletion - Content is in the academic area.... (pinged) en:Contemporary classical music doesn't use any sound files. I don't think adding sound files from Mrepoulis would be accepted there. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 00:33, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
@Mrepoulis: We generally do not host art of non notable artists. The only exception is when the art is needed in another Wikimedia project. So we need here an evidence that either (1) you are a notable artist, or (2) there is a page in a Wikimedia project that needs your image (and none of already existent images can be used as a replacement). In the latter case only the image to be used should e undeleted. Any kind of promotion, including self-promotion is not accepted. Ankry (talk) 09:09, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
In regard to the specific examples en:Contemporary classical music and en:Illustration: these pages naturally focus on noteworthy, well-known and relevant artists. There is no evidence that Mrepoulis' work fulfills any of the relevance criteria of those pages or is in some other way helpful for them. It may also be worth mentioning that en:User:Mrepoulis has a history of self-promotion including the use of sock puppets, resulting in an indefinite ban on the English Wikipedia. fotowettbewerb[edit]

Hallo,

I finished my first page, I hit Publish Page as it recommends but it says "save your work by pressing the Publish Page button below and a button will appear here allowing you to submit your draft for review". adding a photo of a painting owned by the United States government openly displayed at West Point in an area that the public does not have access to[edit]

Hello,

There is a portrait of Russell Red Reeder hanging outside of the Commandant's conference room at the United States Military Academy. My classmate who works there took a picture of the portrait and sent it to me - he owns the picture that he made of the portrait. The United States government owns the portrait. Could my friend allow me to upload the picture that he took? Do we need the permission of the owner of the portrait?

Thank you,

How do I get an old version of a file back?[edit]

User Geckoerer uploaded a poorer resolution version of the file File:The Artiodactyla.jpg. How can I get the old version back? HFoxii (talk) 04:56, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

@HFoxii: Hi, and welcome. After discussion with the other user, in the "File history" section, you should be able to click "revert" to the left of the version you want to revert to, and explain why.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:47, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

Setting default search to include filetype[edit]

Hi, is there a way to change the default search to include the advance option to search for "image only"? I found that it does not necessarily list all the images before heading into PDF-content territory, so ignoring the rest is not really an option. screen shots from newspaper archives with link included?[edit]

would computer screenshots of newspaper archives with a link be acceptable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aias1996 (talk • contribs)

@Aias1996: it depends on the age of the newspaper article in question. As a general rule, anything older than 120 years is definitely out of copyright and fine to upload. Beyond that, it depends on the country it was published in, as anything here has to be public domain in both the origin country and the USA. There is a list of what applies to each country, with the templates to apply, at Copyright rules by territory. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 16:34, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
For the U.S., anything before 1925 is OK ({{PD-US-expired}}). Also, a lot of 1925 through 1963 cases are OK: almost no U.S. newspaper outside of New York renewed its copyrights after 28 years, which was required at the time (({{PD-US-not renewed}}). - Jmabel ! talk 17:15, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

the Boston Globe maintains an almost complete archive its entire catalog of back issues, from 1872-today, there are many photos that would be useful to wikipedia articles but is it permissible to screenshot those photos and add them to wiki commons? Is 1925 a cutoff date? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aias1996 (talk • contribs) 17:41, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

@Aias1996: For anywhere in the US outside New York, it is safe to use 31 December 1963 as the cutoff. Please follow COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:03, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
User:Jeff G. I'm sure that's safe for articles and for staff photos, but is it safe for AP, UPI, and Reuters photos? - Jmabel ! talk 02:51, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

As I thought. So Aias1996, take that as a caution to carefully check photo credits in that Boston Globe archive, and do not use agency photos without making sure of their copyright status separately from that of the newspaper. - Jmabel ! talk 14:53, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Staffan Westerberg[edit]

Hello,

I wanted to publish a page from a theater manuscript by Staffan Westerberg that is representative for his work. It is the story about a father that sneeses without holding his mouth and a funny drawing. In the beginning of the manuscript it says " A theater play for anyone who wants it, drawn and designed by Staffan". Would it be wrong to add it to the descripthon of Staffan?

I accidentally replaced an image with a cropped version of the image instead of creating a new file of the cropped version and I can't undo it.[edit]

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walcott_Cambrian_Geology_and_Paleontology_II_plate_22.jpg

I thought I remembered you could use https://croptool.toolforge.org/ to create a new image which was a crop of another image so I tried using it but I accidentally overwrote the original! I tried undoing it and deleting my upload but it's not working. Can someone help me and delete the new version so it's still the original image? Thanks! Umimmak (talk) 17:43, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

I successfully reverted it but there's still the record of the wrong crop, and I don't know how to delete that or prevent there from being two copies of the original image. Umimmak (talk) 17:45, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

Two superfluous versions of an image -- delete? EXIF data of the first version -- amend?[edit]

Hello experts,

I uploaded an image to w:File:Pichi_Richi_Railway_diesel_locomotive_NSU52_crosses_Saltia_Bridge,_near_Quorn,_South_Australia,_with_passenger_train_on_26_Oct_2019_(Caleb_Jenkins).jpg. An alert member of the OTRS team noticed that the EXIF data showed a different entity as the copyright owner than the one stated on the licence; the camera used for this photo was set to include his name but the copyright owner was his company. Once the copyright owner explained the difficulty of changing the camera in advance for an occasional photo possibly to be included in Wikimedia Commons, it was accepted.

All well and good. At that stage, however, I tried to change the EXIF data on the page to prevent any future confusion. However, the change didn't "stick". Version 2 of the file then appeared in the log, identical to the first.

Today I attempted to revert to the first version, thinking that the second version would be deleted. Now I know what actually happens!

Since all three images are identical, the 2nd and 3rd versions could be deleted.

More importantly, it would be very good if someone with authority could change "Copyright holder" in the EXIF data table from "Caleb Jenkins 2019" to "Caleb's Rail Films 2019". The OTRS ticket #2020080410004392 will contain the consent in those words by the authorised representative of Caleb's Rail Films.

I'll appreciate your advice. Cheers, Simon – SCHolar44 (talk) 08:30, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

  • The reason you thought the change didn't "stick" was doubtless a caching problem. In the future, when this happens, add '?purge' to the URL and, assuming you are using either Firefox or Chrome on a computer, hit CTRL-F5, and the problem will clear up 99% of the time. And if it doesn't, it's still probably a caching problem, just a very recalcitrant one.
  • If you uploaded with different EXIF data, I can promise that it "took". As I say, strictly a caching issue.
  • We don't delete old versions over this sort of thing. When we "delete" a version, it is strictly a "soft delete". All it does is to hide it so that only administrators can see it.
  • The OTRS ticket will sort out the matter. Anything else you need to say can go on the file talk page. - Jmabel ! talk 15:00, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Simple method to extract video frames?[edit]

I recently added a few relevant videos to Commons for the first time. I am now curious if there are any tools available to extract frames from videos for use as images. It seems like this would be useful, and it would be nice to save metadata from those extractions in a manner similar to CropTool. I looked for a bit, but wasn't able to find a tool like this (in which case I'll just continue extracting video frames locally). Thanks! Jlevi (talk) 15:59, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Looks like this is an open issue for CropTool, so the solution won't be there. Jlevi (talk) 15:50, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Importing Album cover from Internet Archive[edit]

I'm sorry if this was addressed before but I didn't find anything. This album on Wikipedia is available on the Internet Archive, with full scans of the cover art. @LOCdataLKR44: Hi, and welcome. Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image designer, photographer, or music publisher (who generally holds copyrights to a music cover) license it on their website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS because we don't allow Fair Use here. • @Jmabel: I have recently been attempting to communicate with them. I am very confused on the proper way to upload media that I have created. When editing, I clicked insert, add media, upload file, and clicked the box confirming "This is my own work

I attest that I own the copyright on this file, and agree to irrevocably release this file to Wikimedia Commons under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license, and I agree to the Terms of Use." What else do I have to do to keep my images from being flagged for deleting? Thanks. HRWSPEC (talk) 15:28, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

    • @HRWSPEC: Without looking too closely, since three other people are already involved (by the way, you can ping them here or on your user talk page, which will probably pull them into discussion), I'm guessing that the materials in question (or very similar material) also appeared elsewhere online, and they had no way to know that your account had any connection to those prior appearances. - Jmabel ! talk 23:38, 31 August 2020 (UTC)\

User requesting to "delete" their account & claim a work they uploaded is a copyright violation[edit]

Hi. Please see the discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Anime eyes & red happy mouth with teeth.jpg and Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections#Prompri. Prompri has asked for two things.

  1. To have their account "nuked" and as much as possible of their personal data they have revealed in previous edits to be wiped. This would be in line with the "courtesy vanishing" guideline on English Wikipedia (w:en:WP:RTV). Creative Commons licensing gives the author the right to change how they are attributed for a work or remove their name from the credit entirely; a vanishing process similar to the one linked here would support that by hiding their identifying information from casual readers. Do we have a similar process on Commons that we can direct the user to?
  2. Advice on how their friend can claim a copyright violation on File:Anime eyes & red happy mouth with teeth.jpg to enable deletion. Prompri has stated that part of the work was created using an image produced by a former classmate without their permission, so Prompri never had the right to upload the image here. I am thinking that Commons:OTRS may be the best method for the original author to submit evidence of their creation and prove the copyright violation. Would that be right or is there another process?

Any advice you can provide would be useful. Thanks. From Hill To Shore (talk) 14:01, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Vanishing is a global process; it cannot be performed on a single wiki, so the Wikipedia guideline is advisory only here. There is no need for such guideline on Commons; they should be rather hold on meta. AFAIK, the only reason that can prevent vanishing is being blocked on some wiki. Monsieur YGER Charles[edit]

METTEZ MOI EN CONTACT AVEC MON CORRESPONDANT Bien cordialement. Mr YGER

@JOEL YGER: Bonjour,
Etc.

Hi, If you want to replace the image in an article in Wikipedia, it must be done there. You can display one image instead of the other in Wikipedia. On Commons, there is nothing to replace, because they are two different images, each with its information. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:39, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
More specifically: while there are occasionally reasons to upload one chart, graph, or map over another in Commons, this is almost never the case for a photo. The only time that would be appropriate is something that is unquestionably an improvement, such as a higher-resolution version of the exact same photograph, or (on your own photo, but almost never on anyone else's without their explicit agreement) a better color-balance. - 23:55, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Asclepias & jmabel- sorry, my question was about the red warnings when changing the file type on a replacement in wikipedia, not your issue I can see now. Clearly image substitution on commons was not being attempted. Horatius At The Bridge (talk) 16:39, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Tool for making long list of filenames[edit]

A former user who has had ~500/4000 of their uploads deleted has some more problematic uploads (probably violating COM:PEOPLE, and some having exactly the same traits criticized in previous deletions). While I don't really want to go through their images, I feel Commons has a duty to the non-consenting subjects. I think that a mass-deletion request would be suitable here, subject to correction. What would be the best tool to rapidly make a list of the filenames for a mass-delete nom, ideally from a page of thumbnails? In a former nom the photos were subcategorized by type of problematicness, so something that would make that easy to do, without spending more time on them, would be good. Being able to search the text would also be useful, as sometimes it is the descriptions that are problematic. Can VisualFileChange or some such do that? Finally, some of the inappropriate texts are in Dutch. Not sure what to do about that; it's not exactly a translation request. I can probably catch a lot of it through intelligent use of a dictionary. HLHJ (talk) 04:28, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

adding new page to Wikipedia[edit]

Hi, I have registered as a contributor and have written the text for a new Wiki page for the Soulsville Foundation, which is the nonprofit parent organization that operates the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Stax Music Academy, and The Soulsville Charter School. I have been the foundation's communications director for 16 years so all information is accurate. HOWEVER, after many attempts I have been unable to actually create the page in Wiki and add it. I'm not terrible tech savvy so if there is an easy way to do this I would very much appreciate instruction. Thanks! Tim Sampson — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timothyfloydsampson (talk • contribs) 14:44, 2 September 2020‎ (UTC)

  • @Timothyfloydsampson: This is not Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons. Also, there is a different Wikipedia in each language; I'm sure you mean the English-language Wikipedia, and you should ask there (probably en:Wikipedia:Teahouse).
  • Before you do that, you probably should read en:WP:COI, the English-language Wikipedia's policies related to conflict of interest.- Jmabel ! talk 16:16, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

Can I upload a political party logo?[edit]

I would like to know if and how I can upload the logo of a political party. I have created the page Our West Lancashire on Wikipedia, and would like to attach the logo of the party.

Could I contact the party directly and ask for explicit permission to use their logo for Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DanJWilde (talk • contribs) 14:45, 2 September 2020‎ (UTC)

  • @DanJWilde: If there is any complexity at all to the logo, then you cannot upload it here on Commons unless it is free-licensed or in the public domain (both unlikely).
  • However, you can add it directly to the English-language Wikipedia using en:Template:Non-free logo (and following the directions there). - Jmabel ! talk 16:21, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding[edit]

@Lcm00: It probably was about your only upload, File:Weeekly.webp, which you subsequently had deleted. Please don't upload any more files "by PlayM from PlayM Naver Post" without licenses.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:25, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

@Maitribhaav: Hello, unfortunately tou are in the wrong place, you want Wikipedia not commons.
Equally so, Wikipedia is not a site where persons can create profiles or articles about themselves or for publicity and related purposes. (As the various forms of social media might do). Wikipedia reports upon what has been written (in-depth coverage) in multiple independent, reliable sources by persons with no connection to the subject. However, there is no barrier to your creating a draft at Wikipedia which can be submitted for review. However, you should be prepared for it to be a long difficult (and likely unsuccessful) process if writing about yourself. Please sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). File:Perkins on BRM 1977.jpg[edit]

I nominated this file for deletion back in June using the automated process. I obviously missed something (although I *thought* on checking that all the steps had been completed) as there seem to have been no developments. I'm afraid I can't figure out what is wrong! Please help. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 10:02, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

@Eagleash: I have tagged the file as a copyvio and !voted to speedily delete it because: COM:CSD#F4, License review NOT passed: Found elsewhere on the web and unlikely to be own work: Google search. Wiki Commons link on Photo competition.[edit]

Although you tell us about registering with Commons in the YouTube video you do NOT put a link up for us to just click on!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by JoeStoner49 (talk • contribs) 13:10, 3 September 2020‎ (UTC)

@JoeStoner49: Hi, and welcome. Which YouTube video is that, exactly?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:30, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
and/or what competition (Commons as such doesn't usually create competitions, but does often give them official recognition). - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Creating a page that will have new additions[edit]

please direct me to the how-to-section that explains creating an ongoing file how to make additions add new images etc — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sforgca (talk • contribs) 17:25, 3 September 2020‎ (UTC) (UTC)

  • @Sforgca: I'm not sure what you mean by an "ongoing file". Each image here is considered a separate file.
  • Did you read the welcome message on your user talk page? Have you checked out the links there, maybe starting with Commons:First steps? - Jmabel ! talk 00:06, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

ZoomViewer not working?[edit]

I have been trying use ZoomViewer to view large images such as File:Las Meninas, by Diego Velázquez, from Prado in Google Earth.jpg and File:Ethnic Map of European Russia by Aleksandr Rittich-1875.jpg in full resolution but I have been getting black screen and the error message "No response from server iipsrv.fcgi". Does anyone else also experience this problem? Is there a way to fix this? StellarHalo (talk) 04:06, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Publishing someone else's image[edit]

Hello, I want to publish an image which belongs to National Polytechnic museum in Sofia, which has allowed me to use it, is it possible? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MotoJawaCZ (talk • contribs) 15:00, 4 September 2020‎ (UTC)

@MotoJawaCZ: Yes. Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it as-is, and have the photographer or a museum official post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:08, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Photo of artist Walter S. Feldman[edit]

I am writing a biography on the significant American modernist artist Walter S. Feldman (1925-2017). In his will he established the Walter S. Feldman Trust for Artwork at Brown University to continue his legacy of art education. Catherine Little Bert of Bert Gallery is the visual arts advisory and curator of that Trust. I am a research assistant working under her direct supervision writing his biography for numerous publications. She has permission from the Trust to use images of the artist, Brown University, and the artist's works to promote the Trust and the artist's legacy. That said I did not personally take the photos of the artist and/his works. They were taken usually by Brown University photographers, or in the case of his art, the artist himself. All he photos I have are previously published in Brown University publications without copyrights. May I upload these photos with the biography? I did not want to claim personal copyright privileges. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArtResearcher1955 (talk • contribs) 15:23, 4 September 2020‎ (UTC)

  • @ArtResearcher1955: "She has permission from the Trust to use images of the artist": too vague for Commons, we need a specific free license for copyrighted material. If copyright has actually been transferred to Brown, or if photographers, their heirs, etc., will grant such a license, great. You can either indicate the specific free license (e.g. CC-BY-SA-4.0) for the image on a page clearly controlled by the copyright-holder (e.g. Brown), and then cite that as a source, or you can go through the COM:OTRS process. Sorry if that is not enough detail: I'm headed out the door right now, someone can follow up if you need more clarification. - Jmabel ! talk 15:50, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
